This week began the annual photo shoot for the Flashes of Pride Poster, which features the faces, names, sexual identity and majors of some of °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ’s LGBTQ+ community and allies.  

After two days of heavy rains and intense winds across Northeast Ohio, the skies cleared, creating perfect weather for this year’s Akron Pride Festival, which took place on Saturday, Aug. 26, in downtown Akron. About 35 °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ students, faculty, staff and alumni gathered to take part in the Akron Equity March, which kicked off this year’s events.

Lydia Rose, Ph.D., director of Public Relations for the Islamic Society of Akron and Kent and an associate professor of sociology at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ, shares her perspectives on the resurgence of Barbie’s influence on our culture today.

When he was a student at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ, Preston Mitchum, BA ‘08, was heavily involved in student government and other organizations and recalls taking part in a considerable number of campus protests. 

Once again, °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ has been named one of the Best Employers for Women in a nationwide ranking by Forbes and marketing research firm Statista. °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ has been named to the list for the sixth consecutive year, having been included each year since Forbes began publishing the Best Employers for Women list in 2018.

°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ graduate Erik Gomez, who earned his bachelor’s degree in political science in May, spoke at Spring Commencement about his journey as a first-generation Latino-American student.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, few disciplines have seen as many changes as psychology. In order to help students address these emerging challenges, °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ’s Department of Psychological Sciences is offering a slate of courses relevant to the changing trends impacting mental health today.

New research methods and topics have emerged as society has taken a greater interest in mental health issues specifically when it comes to cognitive psychology, which includes how we process music or how motivation fosters in the brain.
